adventures in dressmaking

Whenever I use a sewing machine, it always jams up and starts crying, and I have to run away before it explodes, spraying pins and shreds of fabric everywhere. But I got it in my head that I wanted a sparkly, oversized t-shirt dress with a deep neckline for New Years... and I couldn't find it anywhere. Cue my mom - her first job was working for a dressmaker and she's been sewing forever (moms are such wonderful resources, aren't they?). The fabric was my Christmas present! We used a pre-made pattern, which was originally for a sexy prisoner Halloween costume. That's right, I made that into something classy.

Working with a knit was super hard - I think the last photo demonstrates that. Lots of bunching. Apparently this can be solved by putting tape or tissue paper over the fabric before you sew, but I was impatient and it ended up being very unbunchy anyway. The drape on the dress is incredible and it's exactly what I wanted. Would I do it again? Yes, definitely. Probably not without Mama Guise though.

tree hunting

Went with my boyfriend's family this weekend to pick out a tree. Two places and about four hundred trees later, we had the one. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Oh, and doesn't he look oddly comfortable holding a saw? Don't worry, he only used it to sword-fight his nephew. Uhhh.

the great indoors

I've grown to so love my Tuesdays off. Spending the day writing, which includes several additions to my inspiration board (aka chalkboard-painted closet doors). If a fashion blogger wakes up and no one will see her, does she still dress stylishly? I, being biased, think I'm always stylish, but sometimes nothing beats a plain tee and a pair of shorts.

(Black t shirt, Hanes. Mesh shorts, Soffe. Gray sweater, Zara (old). Turquoise drop earrings and silver armor ring, aristan in Peru. Pearl ring, F21.)

Reminds me of old photos of my mom. Minus my chronic bitchface.
A hairstyle I think I'm committing to. Brunettes have the most fun.

Just got proofs from my shoot with the wonderful Stephanie Gussin! I had so much fun! Glad you can't tell I was getting eaten alive! More after the jump.

I already have no idea what I'm doing.

fuji & rome

The perfect apple picking day. I promise I don't usually carry a paring knife around, I was just very prepared. My sister found those boots for me last fall and pretty much made me buy them, and I'm really happy she did. They are the perfect amount of worn-in and provided me with a daytime date outfit I could probably live in.

birthday weekend

Yesterday was my birthday, so I celebrated all weekend long! Highlights included: hiking with Phil and having lunch on top of a mountain, our friend's housewarming party, garage sales, Surf Taco, car ride with Harry, reading the Sunday paper with my mom, all the great phone calls, texts, and cards I got, sushi, and my awesome cake.

DARE tee, boyfriend's, refitted. Pink lace top, F21. Shades, H&M. Necklace, old. Nude scarf, gift from Dad from Italy. Sweater, thrifted, Banana Republic. Silver leaf earrings, H&M.

st. agnes thrift shop

I've officially found the holy grail of thrift shops and it's located in a huge, three-story Victorian mansion attached to a Catholic grade school and a church. It's like the craziest estate sale you've ever been to... but open year round! The people are super friendly, the prices are ridiculous, and they have everything: furniture, clothes, shoes, books, home goods. It was such a trip to visit and I'm totally going back.
